"This is my second time walking with alpacas and this was the best walk. The ladies who walked us round were very knowledgeable and great hosts — we had a laugh. The baby crias were very cute too, and we'll definitely be coming back."

Alpaca walking FAQs

What is alpaca walking?

Alpaca walking is a guided outdoor experience where you lead a halter-trained alpaca along a set trail. At Hensting Alpacas you are paired with your own friendly alpaca and walk together through Itchen Valley Country Park in Hampshire, with an experienced handler guiding you throughout.

How long does the experience last?

The full experience lasts around two hours — including a friendly welcome talk, meeting your alpaca, the guided walk through the valley with feeding stops, and time to get close to the herd afterwards.

Is it suitable for children and beginners?

Yes. Alpacas are calm, gentle animals and no experience is needed. All ages are welcome: children aged 3–12 walk alongside an adult sharing a lead, 12–16s can lead their own alpaca with an adult present, and over-16s walk independently.

How much does an alpaca walk cost?

Walks start from £32 per person, with family and baby-alpaca packages available. You can see every option and live availability on our booking page.

Can I walk a baby alpaca?

When available, yes — our baby-alpaca (cria) walks are a favourite, and packages start from £54. Meet little characters like Buttercup, Daisy and Dandelion.

What should I wear?

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear and dress in layers for the outdoors — wellies are ideal in wet weather. Walks go ahead in most conditions, so bring a waterproof if rain is forecast.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs cannot join the alpaca walk itself, as alpacas are naturally cautious animals. However, dogs are welcome on the wider trails at Itchen Valley Country Park.

Do you run walks all year round?

Yes — we walk through every season, and each one shows off a different side of the Itchen Valley countryside.
