Why Alresford Visitors Make the Trip
Alresford sits close enough to Winchester and the Itchen Valley that an alpaca walk makes an easy half-day out without committing to a long drive. It's become a popular add-on for people already planning a day around the town's Georgian streets, the watercress beds, or a ride on the Watercress Line โ swap the steam engine for a gentler four-legged companion and you've got a full day of contrasts.
The Drive: What to Expect
From Alresford, the walk at Itchen Valley Country Park (Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ) is roughly a 30-minute drive. Head out on the B3047 towards Winchester, join the A31/A33 corridor, and follow signs south towards West End. It's a straightforward route with no tricky junctions, and the last stretch runs through quiet country lanes rather than dual carriageway, so it's a relaxed drive rather than a slog.
What Actually Happens on the Walk
Arrive a little before your slot and you'll be introduced to the herd โ we keep more than 40 alpacas, each with its own personality, and your handler will match you with one suited to your group. There's a short briefing on handling the lead rope before you set off on a roughly 45-minute route through the park's woodland and open meadow. An experienced handler walks with the group the entire time, so there's always someone on hand if your alpaca decides to stop and investigate something interesting, which they occasionally do. The full experience, including the introduction and time with the herd afterwards, runs to about two hours.
What to Wear and Bring
Sturdy, waterproof footwear is the main thing โ the park is grass and woodland paths, and Hampshire mud doesn't care what season it is. Dress for the weather in layers rather than for the walk itself; alpacas are unbothered by drizzle and so, generally, are the walks. Leave valuables in the car and bring a camera or phone, because most people end up taking more photos of their alpaca than they expect to.
Best Times to Go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter and cooler, which alpacas โ bred for altitude in the Andes โ generally prefer to hot afternoons. If you're travelling from Alresford specifically to avoid weekend Winchester traffic, a weekday booking is worth considering. We also run dedicated accessible walks every Wednesday from April to October, with free carer tickets, which is worth knowing if anyone in your group needs a slower pace or extra support.
Making a Day of It
Plenty of Alresford visitors treat the alpaca walk as one half of a day trip โ a morning walk followed by lunch back in town, or vice versa if you fancy the watercress beds first. Because the walk itself only takes up a couple of hours, it fits comfortably either side of exploring Alresford's high street, the Georgian architecture around Broad Street, or a stroll along the water meadows near the River Alre. It's a good option if you want a day that isn't entirely about shopping or sightseeing, with some genuinely hands-on time with animals in the middle of it.
