Alpaca Walking Near Bishop's Waltham: A Local's Guide

17 August 2026

If you're in Bishop's Waltham and wondering what an alpaca walk near you actually involves, this guide covers the practical side — timings, getting there, what to wear and who it suits — so you know exactly what to expect before you book.

Getting There From Bishop's Waltham

Our alpacas are based at Itchen Valley Country Park, Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ — about fifteen to twenty minutes from Bishop's Waltham via the B2177 through Durley and Botley, joining the B3035 into West End. It's a straightforward country drive with no motorway sections, and there's parking on site at the country park.

What To Expect On The Day

Arrive a few minutes before your slot and you'll be introduced to the herd — we keep more than 40 alpacas, all halter-trained, so your handler will match you with an animal suited to your experience and confidence. After a short briefing on leading technique, you'll head out on a guided route through Itchen Valley Country Park for around two hours, walking your own alpaca the whole way rather than just watching someone else do it.

What To Wear

Sturdy, comfortable shoes are the main thing — you'll be on grass and country park paths, which can be muddy after rain, so wellies or walking boots are a safer bet than trainers in winter. Bring a coat regardless of season; Hampshire weather changes fast, and you're outdoors for the full two hours. Layers work well, since leading an alpaca is more active than it looks.

Who Books From The Bishop's Waltham Area

We see a real mix: families topping off a weekend with something different to the usual pub lunch or the lake walk, couples treating an anniversary or birthday to something less predictable than a restaurant booking, and small groups of friends who've done most of the obvious Hampshire days out already. Because Bishop's Waltham is close enough for a half-day trip, it's easy to book a morning walk and still have the afternoon free back in town.

Prices and Booking

Walks start from £32 per person, with family packages from £92 and baby-alpaca walks (for the youngest members of the herd) from £54. An extra walker can join for £18, and we offer optional rescheduling insurance for £4.50 if Hampshire weather makes you nervous about committing to a date. Gift vouchers are available too, which several Bishop's Waltham customers have used for birthdays and Christmas presents.

Full details and availability for the walk itself are on our Alpaca Walking near Bishop's Waltham event page, or call us directly on 0333 050 4012 if you'd rather book by phone.

Accessibility

We run accessible walks every Wednesday between April and October, with free tickets for carers — worth knowing if anyone in your group needs step-free, lower-mobility routes around the country park.
