Far fewer people realise that one of Hampshire's more unusual experiences is almost on their doorstep. Hensting Alpacas runs guided alpaca walks at Itchen Valley Country Park in West End, and for Fair Oak residents it is a short, easy drive. Getting there from Fair Oak
The park sits on Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ. From most of Fair Oak and Horton Heath you are looking at roughly ten to fifteen minutes by car, heading south-west towards West End. Put the postcode into your sat nav and allow a few minutes extra at busy times of day. There is no need to set off at dawn or plan motorway stops, which makes it ideal for families with little ones who do not travel well.
What actually happens on an alpaca walk?
The experience lasts around two hours. You start by meeting the herd and your handler, who explains how to hold the lead, how alpacas like to be approached and what to do if yours stops to graze. Each walker (or pair, for younger children) is then matched with a halter-trained alpaca.
From there it is a relaxed, guided stroll through the country park. Alpacas set a calm pace, so it is not a strenuous hike. Along the way, the handler shares stories about the animals, how they are cared for, and what makes each one tick. Many walkers say the moment they remember most is simply the quiet: walking beside a gentle animal through open meadow, away from screens and traffic.
Is it right for your group?
Alpaca walking suits a wide range of people. Here is how ages work:
- Ages 3 to 12: share a lead with an adult.
- Ages 12 to 16: can lead their own alpaca with an adult present.
- 16 and over: walk independently.

Local ideas for making a day of it
Because you are not travelling far, it is easy to pair your walk with something else. Itchen Valley Country Park itself has woodland and meadow paths to explore before or after your session. Closer to home, Fair Oak families often finish with lunch locally, or combine the walk with a visit from out-of-town relatives who want to see a bit of Hampshire countryside. An alpaca walk is also a popular choice for small birthday groups, since it is sociable, outdoors and very photogenic.
What to wear and bring
- Sturdy footwear: the paths can be muddy, especially after rain. Wellies or walking boots are ideal.
- Layers: meadows can be breezier than your garden. A waterproof jacket is sensible most of the year.
- A phone or camera: you will want photos, and the handlers are happy to help with group shots.
- Water: especially on warmer days.
Leave dangling scarves or loose bags at home if you can, as they make holding the lead trickier.

Walks start from £32 per person. Family packages begin at £92, and baby alpaca walks, where you get time with our youngest animals, start from £54. Extra walkers are £18 each. Because Hampshire weather has a mind of its own, you can add rescheduling insurance for £4.50. Gift vouchers are also available if you would rather treat someone else.
