Alpaca Walking in Hampshire: Your Complete Guide

9 July 2026

Alpaca walking has become one of Hampshire's most-loved days out — and for good reason. It is calm, hands-on, wonderfully photogenic, and suitable for almost everyone. This guide covers everything you need to know before you walk with our herd at Itchen Valley Country Park near Southampton.

What is alpaca walking?

Alpaca walking is a guided outdoor experience where you lead a halter-trained alpaca along a set trail. At Hensting Alpacas you are paired with your own gentle alpaca and walk together through woodland and water meadows, accompanied by an experienced handler. No experience is needed.

What to expect on the day

A typical walk lasts around two hours. You will start with a friendly welcome and a short talk about alpacas, meet your walking companion, then set off on a scenic route with feeding stops. Afterwards there is plenty of time for photos and up-close time with the herd.

Who can go?

All ages are welcome. Children aged 3–12 walk alongside an adult sharing a lead, 12–16s can lead their own alpaca with an adult present, and over-16s walk independently. We also run relaxed, accessible walks every Wednesday from April to October.

What to wear

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear — wellies in wet weather — and dress in layers for the outdoors. Walks go ahead in most conditions, so pack a waterproof if rain is forecast.

How much does it cost?

Walks start from £32 per person, with family packages from £92 and baby-alpaca walks from £54. Gift vouchers make a memorable present.

Where and how to book

We are based at Itchen Valley Country Park, Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ — around 15 minutes from Southampton, Winchester and Eastleigh. Advance booking is essential, so reserve your date online to avoid disappointment.
