If you are based in Lyndhurst, your days probably revolve around forest trails, ponies on the road and the odd scone. Adding an alpaca walk gives you a morning that people remember long after the holiday photos have been sorted. This guide covers how to get there, what happens, and how to make the most of it. You can see dates and details on our Lyndhurst alpaca walking page.
Is it worth leaving the Forest for?
The drive to Itchen Valley Country Park in West End usually takes around thirty minutes from Lyndhurst, depending on traffic. That is short enough to fit around a morning or afternoon, and the setting is a pleasant change: gentle river valley, open meadow and shaded woodland rather than heathland. Many visitors tell us it makes a lovely counterpoint to their usual forest wanderings.
What actually happens on the day
Arrive a little early so you can park and find the meeting point. Your handler gives a short briefing, then introduces you to your alpaca. Each of our 40+ animals is halter-trained, and you lead yours yourself rather than watching from the sidelines. The walk lasts roughly two hours at a relaxed pace, with time to stop, take pictures and simply enjoy the animals. Alpacas hum, tilt their heads and investigate pockets, so expect to laugh.
Who it suits
Almost everyone. Children from 3 to 12 share a lead with an adult, those aged 12 to 16 lead with an adult present, and anyone 16 or over can walk independently. It works well for couples, multi-generational groups and friends. Accessible walks run every Wednesday from April to October, and carers come free.
What to wear and bring
- Sturdy shoes or wellies; paths can be damp, especially after rain.
- Layers and a waterproof, as the weather can turn.
- A phone or camera on a wrist strap.
- Water, and sun cream in summer.
Skip anything dangling or flappy that might distract your alpaca, and keep snacks out of sight.
Turning it into a full day
Because you are already heading towards Southampton, you could pair the walk with lunch in nearby West End or Hedge End, or return via the Forest for a late afternoon stroll. Alpaca walking is about as relaxed as outdoor activities get, so you will not be worn out for the rest of your day.
Prices and booking
Walks start from £32 per person. Family packages begin at £92, baby alpaca walks from £54, and extra walkers are £18. Rescheduling insurance costs £4.50 if your plans are weather-dependent or unpredictable, which is worth considering on a holiday. Gift vouchers are available too, ideal if you are buying for someone who loves the Forest. Book online or call 0333 050 4012.
