Half-Term Alpaca Walks: The Family Day Out Hampshire Kids Actually Want

20 August 2026

Half-term throws up the same challenge every time: you've got several days to fill, a mix of ages to keep happy, and a limited appetite for another trip to a play centre or cinema. An alpaca walk at Hensting Alpacas solves that particular puzzle rather well — it's active, it's outdoors, and it's different enough that nobody in the group has probably done it before.

Why an alpaca walk works so well for half-term

Unlike a lot of "family" activities that really only entertain the children, leading your own alpaca gives everyone a job to do. Grandparents get a gentle two-hour stroll rather than a route march; teenagers get an animal that's genuinely curious about them rather than a screen; younger children get the novelty of walking something taller than they are. It's the rare half-term outing where the adults tend to enjoy themselves just as much as the kids, which is not something we can say about trampoline parks.

What actually happens on the walk

You'll arrive at Itchen Valley Country Park in West End, just outside Southampton, and be matched with a halter-trained alpaca from our herd of more than 40. One of our experienced handlers leads the group along the park's woodland and parkland paths for around two hours, giving you time to get comfortable holding the lead, ask questions about alpaca behaviour, and stop for photos wherever the path opens out. Children aged 3 to 12 share the lead with an adult, 12 to 16-year-olds can hold their own lead with an adult nearby, and anyone over 16 walks solo. If you've got a toddler who's not quite ready for the full walk, our baby-alpaca walks (from £54) are a shorter, gentler way to meet this year's crias instead.

Which half-term suits you best

We run walks throughout the year, so October half-term, February half-term and the late-May break all work equally well — though each has its own character. October brings crisp air and autumn colour through the park, February walks are bracing but often surprisingly clear, and May half-term usually means the herd is out enjoying longer days and fresh spring grass. If the forecast looks unpredictable, which in Hampshire it usually does, we'd suggest adding rescheduling insurance for £4.50 so a downpour doesn't cost you your booking.

What to wear and bring

Sturdy shoes or wellies are the main essential, since the paths can be muddy after rain regardless of the season. Layers work better than one heavy coat, particularly for the February slot, and it's worth bringing a phone or camera — alpacas are surprisingly photogenic and half-term photos of the kids leading one through the woods tend to get more likes than the usual soft-play snaps. We also run accessible walks every Wednesday between April and October, with free tickets for carers, if anyone in your group needs step-free paths or extra support.

Prices and how to book

Individual walks start from £32 per person, with family packages from £92 and an extra walker available for £18 if someone else wants to join in. Half-term slots are consistently our busiest of the year, so we'd recommend booking as soon as your dates are confirmed rather than leaving it to the week itself — particularly if you want a specific time slot around nap schedules or a long drive home. You can see full details and book directly on our half-term alpaca walks page, or call the team on 0333 050 4012 if you'd rather talk through timings first. Gift vouchers are also available, which makes for an easy answer if a relative is visiting for the break and asks what everyone would like to do together.
