Ask most people whether they'd book an outdoor experience on a wet day and the answer is a wince. Ask people who have actually walked an alpaca in the rain and you'll hear something very different. Are alpacas bothered by rain?
Barely. Alpacas evolved in the Andes, where rain, sleet and fierce sun can all arrive before lunch. Their fleece is dense and traps a layer of air close to the skin, so water tends to bead on the outside rather than soak through. You'll often see them grazing happily in a shower, and if it gets heavy they simply turn their backsides to the weather and carry on. A wet alpaca does look a little comical, and that is half the charm.
What we do if the weather is properly bad
Light or steady rain does not stop a walk. Our decisions are based on safety: strong winds, lightning or conditions that make the paths unsafe are the only real reasons to change plans. If that happens we will contact you directly. For extra reassurance, you can add rescheduling insurance for £4.50 when you book, so a change of plan never costs you your day out.
What to wear
Think country walk rather than city stroll. A waterproof jacket with a hood works better than an umbrella, because you'll want both hands free to hold the lead rope. Wear boots or trainers you don't mind getting muddy, and consider waterproof trousers if the ground is soggy. Bring a spare pair of socks and a towel to leave in the car, plus a warm drink for afterwards. Gloves are handy in autumn and winter.
Who it suits
Families with energetic children often do best, because puddles are entertainment in themselves. Children aged 3 to 12 share a lead with an adult, those aged 12 to 16 lead with an adult present, and anyone 16 or over can walk independently. Couples and friends enjoy the quiet, since a wet day at Itchen Valley Country Park is far less crowded. Our accessible walks run every Wednesday from April to October, with free carer tickets.
Making the most of a damp morning
Slow down and enjoy the details: mist lifting off the meadow, the sound of rain in the trees, and the soft hum alpacas make when they're content. Take photographs before you set off, since lenses and screens get spotted quickly, and a small dry bag will protect your phone. Your handler will help you get to know your alpaca's personality, which often shows more clearly when the herd is relaxed.
