When the temperature drops and the frost lingers on the grass, most outdoor activities lose their shine. Alpaca walking is the happy exception. Bred over thousands of years for the freezing altitudes of the Andes, alpacas find a Hampshire winter mild and invigorating — and their good mood is contagious. If you are looking for a genuinely different winter day out near Southampton, here is our complete guide to walking with them at Itchen Valley Country Park.
Why alpacas thrive in the cold
An alpaca's dense fleece is one of the warmest natural fibres in the world, which is exactly why winter suits them so well. Where you and I bundle up in coats, they simply stroll out into the frost as though nothing has changed. You will notice they are often livelier on a crisp day than in summer heat, pronking about the field and pricking their ears at every sound. Walking a contented, energetic alpaca through a still winter landscape is a real tonic for grey January spirits.
What a winter walk is like
Our guided walks run for around two hours whatever the season. You are paired with your own halter-trained alpaca and accompanied throughout by an experienced handler who shows you the ropes. In winter the valley feels wonderfully wide and open: the leaves are down, the views stretch further, and the paths are quiet. Expect firm ground on frosty mornings, softer going after rain, and plenty of chances to stop for photos while your breath and your alpaca's mingle in the cold air. You can see full details and dates on our winter alpaca walks page.
What to wear
The single most useful tip we give winter walkers is to dress for standing still, not just for moving. You will pause often to admire and photograph your alpaca, and that is when the cold creeps in. Wear waterproof boots or wellies with thick socks, bring gloves and a warm hat, and layer up so you can adjust. Waterproofs are wise given the British winter, and a hot drink for afterwards is the perfect finishing touch.
Who winter walks suit
Winter walks are brilliant for families looking to burn off cabin fever, for couples wanting a fresh-air alternative to another indoor date, and for anyone who fancies a memorable Christmas or New Year gift experience. All ages are welcome: three to twelve-year-olds share a lead with an adult, twelve to sixteens lead with a grown-up present, and over-sixteens walk on their own. Our accessible walks run on Wednesdays from April to October, but do call us to discuss winter access needs and we will help where we can.
