Havant families searching for a day out that isn't another trip round the shops or along the seafront now have something properly different just up the road. Hensting Alpacas at Itchen Valley Country Park is around 25 minutes from Havant via the A27 and M27, and it swaps the flat, built-up feel of the Solent coast for 440 acres of Hampshire parkland, meadow and riverside along the Itchen.
This isn't a five-minute petting-pen visit. Every visitor is matched with their own halter-trained alpaca from our herd of 40-plus and leads it themselves for a relaxed two-hour walk through the park, with an experienced handler alongside the whole time to help with technique, answer questions and make sure everyone (alpaca included) is having a good time. It's a slower pace than most Havant weekends allow, and that's rather the point.
We're used to welcoming visitors from right across the Havant and Waterlooville area, plus plenty who make the short hop over from Hayling Island and Emsworth for the day. The route in is straightforward motorway driving, with free on-site parking at Itchen Valley Country Park, so there's no need to battle Southampton traffic or hunt for a space once you arrive.
Children aged 3 to 12 share a lead with an adult, those aged 12 to 16 can lead independently with an adult nearby, and anyone 16 and over walks solo. That range makes it a genuine three-generation outing: we regularly see grandparents from the Havant area bringing grandchildren along, or couples treating it as a change of pace from the usual coastal walk. Wednesdays from April to October are set aside as accessible walking days, with free carer tickets, for anyone who needs a gentler pace or extra support.
