A gentle guided alpaca walk just a short drive from Romsey, set in the meadows and woodland of Itchen Valley Country Park. Lead your own halter-trained alpaca for around two hours.
If you live in or around Romsey and fancy a genuinely different day out, our guided alpaca walks are only a short hop across the Test Valley at Itchen Valley Country Park in West End. From the centre of Romsey it is roughly twenty minutes by car, straight along the A3057 and A27 or via the M27, so you can swap the bustle of the Market Place for a peaceful morning with the herd without any real effort.
Romsey is a town that already knows the value of green space, from the water meadows below the Abbey to the walks along the River Test and the sweep of the Broadlands estate. An alpaca walk fits that same slow, outdoors mood. Instead of watching the countryside go past, you are out in it, holding the lead rope of your own alpaca as it ambles along the shaded trails, pauses to nibble a hedgerow and gives you that unmistakable curious stare. It is calm, a little bit silly, and surprisingly restorative.
You will be paired with one of our forty-plus alpacas after a short introduction from an experienced handler, who stays with your group throughout. We show you how to hold the halter, read your alpaca's body language and keep a comfortable pace. The route winds through meadow and woodland for about two hours, with plenty of stops for photographs and questions. No experience is needed and the alpacas are all halter-trained and used to first-time walkers, so nervous beginners and excitable children settle in quickly.
These walks work beautifully for a range of Romsey outings: a relaxed thing to do at the weekend, a birthday treat, a small hen gathering, a gift for someone who has everything, or simply a screen-free afternoon with the family. Children aged three to twelve share a lead with an adult, twelve to sixteen-year-olds can lead with an adult present, and anyone sixteen and over can take a rope of their own. We also run accessible walks every Wednesday from April to October with free carer tickets.
Itchen Valley Country Park is at Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ. Head out of Romsey towards Southampton, pick up the M27 eastbound and come off for West End, then follow the brown park signs to Allington Lane. There is plenty of free parking on site, a café for afterwards and miles of family trails if you want to make a longer day of it. We are a family-run, BAS-registered farm that has been keeping alpacas for sixteen years, so you are in experienced hands from the moment you arrive.
