Guided alpaca walks a short drive from Winchester city centre — lead your own halter-trained alpaca through Itchen Valley Country Park in around two hours.
If you live in or around Winchester and fancy swapping the cathedral crowds and the bustle of the High Street for a couple of hours in the fresh Hampshire air, a guided alpaca walk is one of the loveliest days out on your doorstep. Our alpacas graze at Itchen Valley Country Park in West End, roughly fifteen minutes down the A31 and M3 from the centre of Winchester, so you can be leading your own woolly companion through riverside meadows before you'd normally have finished your morning coffee.
Winchester folk are spoiled for green space, from St Catherine's Hill to the water meadows along the Itchen, so it takes something a little different to tempt them out. That is exactly what an alpaca walk offers. You are not simply admiring the animals over a fence — you are handed a halter rope, matched with your own alpaca for the session, and shown by an experienced handler how to read your animal's mood, encourage it along the trail and keep it calm around hedgerows and dappled woodland. The pace is gentle and unhurried, which suits everyone from restless children to grandparents who want a proper reason to slow down.
The drive is genuinely easy. Head south on the M3, come off towards West End and follow the lane to Allington Lane, SO30 3HQ, where there is plenty of free parking right by the meeting point. If you prefer not to drive, the park sits close to regular bus routes between Winchester, Eastleigh and Southampton. Because the whole experience lasts around two hours, it fits neatly into a morning or an afternoon, leaving the rest of your day free to explore.
All ages are welcome. Children aged three to twelve share a lead rope with an accompanying adult, twelve to sixteen-year-olds can lead their own alpaca with an adult present, and anyone sixteen and over walks independently. It makes a memorable birthday treat, a relaxed catch-up with friends, or simply a screen-free afternoon for a Winchester family looking for something out of the ordinary. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are all you need — the alpacas provide the charm.
Walks start from £32 per person, with family packages from £92 and baby-alpaca walks from £54. Gift vouchers make a wonderful present for the Winchester friend who has everything. We are a family-run, BAS-registered herd of more than forty alpacas, cared for by the same people for sixteen years. To reserve your spot, book online or call us on 0333 050 4012, and we'll match you with an alpaca who's every bit as pleased to meet you.
