There is something quietly magical about spending a morning alongside a baby alpaca. Our Baby Alpaca Walks at Itchen Valley Country Park give you the chance to meet our youngest crias up close, watch them bounce and pronk across the paddock, and enjoy a slower, softer version of the classic alpaca experience. Set on the wooded trails just outside Southampton, it is a walk built around gentleness — the perfect introduction for anyone who has fallen for those enormous eyes and fluffy topknots.
On a standard walk you lead a fully grown, halter-trained alpaca. On our baby-focused sessions the pace is deliberately calmer and the emphasis is on time with the little ones and the nursery group of mums and youngsters. Young crias are naturally inquisitive, so you will often find one nosing at your sleeve or trotting alongside to see what you are up to. An experienced handler stays with you throughout to explain how the babies are raised, what those humming sounds mean, and how our 40-plus alpacas look after their young. It is roughly two hours of fresh Hampshire air, laughter and photographs you will keep for years.
Baby alpaca walks are wonderful for families with younger children, grandparents wanting a gentle day out, and anyone who prefers a relaxed, low-key encounter over a brisker trek. Children aged three to twelve share a lead with an adult, so even small hands can feel involved without being overwhelmed. It is also a lovely choice for a birthday treat, a quiet anniversary, or simply a mid-week reset away from screens.
Crias tend to arrive from late spring through summer, so the warmer months are when the paddock is at its liveliest with youngsters, but our nursery group means there is usually a young face to meet across much of the year. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you do not mind getting a little muddy, bring a light waterproof for Hampshire's changeable skies, and pack a camera. We are around fifteen minutes from Southampton, Winchester and Eastleigh, with easy access from Portsmouth, Fareham, Romsey and beyond.
