At Hensting Alpacas we host birthday alpaca walks at Itchen Valley Country Park in West End, near Southampton, where the person celebrating gets to meet, halter and lead their very own alpaca on a gentle two-hour ramble. It is calm, joyful and genuinely different — the kind of birthday people still talk about months later.
There is something disarming about walking beside a curious, soft-eyed alpaca. Phones go in pockets, everyone slows down, and the birthday quickly becomes about laughter and shared moments rather than a checklist of activities. Our alpacas are all halter-trained and used to people, so even first-time walkers feel confident within minutes. With more than 40 alpacas on the farm, there is a whole herd of characters to meet, from the bold and nosy to the gentle and shy — and birthday guests love picking their favourite before setting off.
We welcome birthdays of every kind. Children from 3 to 12 share a lead with an adult, so younger birthday stars can join in safely. Those aged 12 to 16 can lead an alpaca with an adult present, and anyone 16 and over walks independently. That flexibility makes us a favourite for milestone birthdays across the board — a fifth birthday with grandparents, a teenager's animal-mad celebration, a thirtieth with friends, or a special decade birthday for someone who has everything and wants an experience instead of another gift.
You will be met by one of our experienced handlers who introduces the herd and shows you how to hold the halter. After a few minutes getting acquainted, the group heads out along the quiet trails and open meadows of Itchen Valley Country Park. The pace is unhurried — alpacas like to pause and browse — so there is plenty of time for photos and for the birthday group to relax together. Afterwards there is usually time for more fuss and feeding before you head home.
Walks start from just £32 per person, with family packages from £92, so it is easy to gather the birthday party together. An extra walker can be added from £18, and gift vouchers are available if you would rather surprise the birthday person than book the date yourself.
