Alpaca Walking from Bursledon: A Local's Guide to a Fluffy Day Out

6 October 2026

Bursledon is known for its boats, its creeks and its easy-going pace. What many residents haven't yet discovered is that one of Hampshire's most memorable outdoor experiences is only a short drive away. This guide covers what to expect if you are planning an alpaca walk from Bursledon.

Getting there from Bursledon

Our walks start at Itchen Valley Country Park, Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ. From Bursledon, allow roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car depending on traffic and which route you prefer. Because the journey is so short, an afternoon walk fits easily around school pick-ups, Sunday lunch or a morning on the river.

What actually happens on the day

Arrive a few minutes early so you can park and meet your handler. You will be introduced to the alpacas, shown how to hold the lead rope and told the simple rules: stay calm, walk at the alpaca's pace and never hug from behind. Then you set off through the park for around two hours, leading your own animal the whole way. Our handlers know every alpaca personally and will match you with one that suits you.

Is it right for your group?

Children aged 3 to 12 share a lead with an adult. Young people aged 12 to 16 can lead with an adult present, and anyone 16 or over walks independently. Dog-loving couples, grandparents with grandchildren and friends catching up all enjoy it, because the pace is relaxed and the conversation is easy. We also run accessible walks every Wednesday from April to October, and carers come free.

What to wear

Think sensible footwear and layers. Parkland paths can be muddy after rain, so trainers you don't mind dirtying or walking boots are best. Bring a waterproof if the forecast looks changeable, and sun cream in summer. Alpacas are not fussed by weather, but you will be happier if you are dressed for it. Leave large bags in the car and keep hands free for your lead rope and camera.

Prices

Walks start from £32 per person. Family packages begin at £92, which is good value for a group of four. Baby alpaca walks start at £54, and an extra walker is £18. If you want peace of mind, rescheduling insurance costs £4.50.

Making it a day out

After your walk you are already close to Bursledon, Hamble and Hedge End, so it is easy to add a riverside lunch or a pub stop. If you are buying for someone else, gift vouchers are available and suit birthdays, anniversaries and thank-yous.

How to book

Choose your date on our online calendar or call 0333 050 4012. We have been family-run for 16 years and are BAS-registered, with more than 40 alpacas ready to meet you. Book ahead at weekends and school holidays, as the popular slots go quickly.
