Alpaca Walking in Southampton: Your Complete Guide to a Day Out with the Herd

3 August 2026

If you are looking for something a little different to do in Southampton, walking an alpaca through quiet woodland might be the most charming option on the list. Here is everything you need to plan the perfect visit.

Where the walks happen

Our guided alpaca walks are based at Itchen Valley Country Park in West End, on the eastern edge of Southampton (postcode SO30 3HQ). It is roughly a fifteen-minute drive from the city centre and easy to reach from the M27 at junction 7. The park has its own free car park, so you can arrive relaxed and leave the city traffic behind. You can see full details and dates on our Alpaca Walking in Southampton page.

What to expect on the day

When you arrive you will meet your handler and be introduced to the alpaca you will be leading. After a short safety briefing and a few tips on how to hold the lead, you will set off together along the park's shaded trails. The walk takes about two hours at a gentle, unhurried pace, with plenty of pauses for the alpacas to nibble and for you to take photos. No experience is needed — our animals are halter-trained and used to being led by first-timers.

Who it suits

Alpaca walking is wonderfully inclusive. Little ones aged three to eleven share a lead with an adult, twelve to sixteen-year-olds can take the lead with a grown-up alongside, and anyone sixteen or over walks independently. That makes it a great fit for families, groups of friends, couples looking for an unusual date, or grandparents wanting a calm outing with the grandchildren. We also run accessible walks every Wednesday from April to October, with free carer tickets.

What to wear

Dress for a countryside walk rather than a city stroll. Closed, sturdy footwear such as trainers or walking boots is essential — the woodland paths can be soft after Southampton's damp spells. Bring a waterproof if the forecast looks uncertain, dress in layers, and wear clothes you don't mind getting a little grubby. Don't forget a camera or a charged phone; the photo opportunities are endless.

Prices and what is included

Walks start from £32 per person, with family packages from £92 and our popular baby-alpaca walks from £54. An extra walker can join a lead for £18, and if your plans might change we offer rescheduling insurance for £4.50. Gift vouchers are available too, which make a lovely present for a Southampton birthday or anniversary.

How to book

Weekend and school-holiday slots fill up fast, so it is well worth booking ahead. You can check live availability and reserve online, or call us on 0333 050 4012 if you have any questions. Once you have picked your date, head over to the Southampton alpaca walking page to secure your place. We look forward to introducing you to the herd.
