Fancy swapping the bustle of Southampton for a couple of hours in the company of forty gentle alpacas? Our guided walks take place at Itchen Valley Country Park, Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ — close enough to reach in around fifteen minutes from the city centre, yet a world away in atmosphere. Once you step onto the meadow trails you would never guess the docks and the high street were so near.
Southampton has plenty of days out, but few let you walk shoulder to shoulder with an alpaca. Each guest is paired with their own halter-trained animal and led along the park's shaded woodland paths by one of our experienced handlers. The pace is slow and calm, giving you time to learn each alpaca's quirks — some are nosy, some are shy, and a few will happily lean in for a photo. The whole experience lasts roughly two hours and suits absolute beginners.
Coming from Portswood, Bitterne or Woolston? Head for West End and follow the brown tourist signs to Itchen Valley Country Park. There is free on-site parking, and the M27 (junction 7) is just up the road, so friends travelling in from Eastleigh, Hedge End or Chandler's Ford can meet you at the gate. The park's own car park means no city-centre parking headaches.
Our Southampton walks welcome all ages. Children aged three to eleven share a lead with a grown-up, twelve to sixteens can lead an alpaca with an adult alongside, and anyone sixteen and over walks independently. It makes a memorable birthday treat, a relaxed catch-up with friends, or a gentle outing for visiting relatives who want to see a softer side of the city.
We have been raising alpacas for sixteen years and are proud to be BAS-registered. Our herd of more than forty animals is well handled and used to visitors, so the walks are safe, unhurried and genuinely joyful. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a little muddy, and bring a camera — you will want to remember it.
