Autumn Alpaca Walks in Hampshire: A Golden-Season Guide

19 July 2026

When the woodland turns amber and the mornings sharpen, an alpaca walk becomes something special. Autumn is arguably the finest time of year to visit our herd at Itchen Valley Country Park, and this guide covers everything you need to plan your golden-season walk.

Why go in autumn

Alpacas are Andean animals built for cool, thin mountain air, so a crisp Hampshire autumn suits them far better than midsummer. Expect a livelier, more engaged herd, softer light filtering through copper leaves and quieter trails now the summer crowds have thinned. It is a genuinely different experience from a bright July walk — slower, calmer and beautifully seasonal.

What to expect on the day

Your autumn alpaca walk lasts around two hours. You will meet your alpaca, learn to handle the halter and set off along flat, well-kept woodland and meadow paths beside the River Itchen, with an experienced handler on hand throughout. There is no rush: time to pause for photographs, to let your alpaca nibble the hedgerow and to ask everything you have ever wondered about these curious creatures.

Best times to book

Weekday mornings in September and October tend to be the most peaceful, with the turning leaves at their best. Autumn half-term is popular with families, so book ahead if you have children in tow. As the clocks change and November arrives, walks take on a moody, atmospheric feel that photographers in particular love.

What to wear

Dress for soft ground and changeable weather. Waterproof boots or wellies, a warm mid-layer and a light waterproof will keep you comfortable, and gloves are worth packing for the later weeks. The alpacas are unfazed by light rain, so walks go ahead in most conditions; we will contact you directly if the forecast forces a change.

Who autumn walks suit

All ages are welcome. Children aged three to eleven share a lead with an adult, twelve to sixteen-year-olds lead with an adult present, and adults walk independently. Whether you are planning a half-term treat, a quiet couples' outing, a birthday surprise or a photography session, the season lends itself to all of them. Accessible walks continue every Wednesday until the end of October, with free carer tickets.

Prices and how to book

Autumn walks start from £32 per person, with family packages from £92 and baby-alpaca walks from £54. Extra walkers are £18, and optional rescheduling insurance is £4.50 should autumn weather turn. Gift vouchers make a warming present as the nights draw in. We are a family-run, BAS-registered farm of sixteen years, based at Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ — about fifteen minutes from Southampton, Winchester and Eastleigh, and easily reached from Portsmouth, Fareham, Romsey, Basingstoke and the New Forest. Reserve your place online or call us on 0333 050 4012, and come share a golden Hampshire afternoon with the friendliest herd around.
