Crunch through golden leaves alongside a halter-trained alpaca this autumn at Itchen Valley Country Park. Crisp air, quiet woodland trails and the friendliest walking companions in Hampshire.
There is no finer season to meet an alpaca than autumn. As the beeches and oaks of Itchen Valley Country Park turn copper and gold, our herd comes into its own — thick fleeces regrown after the summer shear, a spring in every step, and cool mornings that alpacas simply adore. An autumn alpaca walk in Hampshire pairs the calm of a woodland stroll with two hours in the company of a gentle, inquisitive animal you lead yourself.
Alpacas originate from the high Andes, so the mild chill of a Hampshire October is far more comfortable for them than July heat. You will notice the difference: they are livelier, more curious and keener to walk. The seasonal light through the turning canopy also makes for wonderful photographs, and the park is noticeably quieter once the school holidays end, so your walk feels calm and unhurried.
You will be introduced to your alpaca, learn how to hold the halter and read its body language, then set off on the trails with an experienced handler close by. The route winds through mixed woodland and open meadow beside the River Itchen — flat, easy underfoot and roughly two hours from welcome to farewell. Along the way there is plenty of time to pause, take photos and ask questions about our forty-strong herd.
Autumn ground can be soft, so sturdy boots or wellies are ideal, along with a warm layer and a waterproof if the forecast looks unsettled. A flask of something hot for afterwards is never a bad idea. We walk in most weather — a little drizzle rarely bothers an alpaca — and we will always let you know in advance if conditions mean rescheduling.
Everyone is welcome. Children aged three to eleven share a lead with an adult, twelve to sixteen-year-olds lead with an adult present, and over-sixteens walk independently. Autumn half-term makes this a lovely family outing, while a quiet weekday walk is perfect for couples, photographers or anyone wanting a peaceful escape. Accessible walks run every Wednesday through to the end of October, with free carer tickets.
We are a family-run, BAS-registered farm that has shared these alpacas with visitors for sixteen years, based just fifteen minutes from Southampton, Winchester and Eastleigh. Booking is straightforward and gift vouchers are available if you would like to give an autumn walk as a present. Come and make a memory among the falling leaves.
